A Good Old Game of Thanksgiving Football |
Our family is ultra-competitive. For the last ten or more years we gather at my Grandma's house for Thanksgiving dinner, but even more importantly, we play the annual Robie Family Thanksgiving Day Football Game. We don't mess around. Everyone shows up by noon and we pick two team captains out of a hat. Then by 1:00 the RFL draft begins. Each team takes turns picking players until everyone is put on a team. Each team then gets about half an hour to practice and come up with their game plan. Grandpa and Uncle Jim play referee and the quarter is flipped by 2:00 pm. We fight a good battle and play some mean touch football. Then when it's all over, the winning team is crowned the Turkey Day Champion of the year. The winning team's name is added to the bottom of the homemade trophy before it goes back on the shelf in Grandpa's office. Of course the rest of the afternoon consists of the winners taunting the losing team. We have so much fun and work up a huge appetite for a big Thanksgiving dinner.
