Memories of Christmas

The Santa Video>

Christmas time brings thoughts of my traditions as thoughts of my family always come to my mind. My family truly enjoyed Christmas as there was decorating the home inside and out, lots of baking, and gift wrapping. There was always Christmas music playing and wonderful aromas from the kitchen. Christmas Eve day was always hectic but the evening was always the same. My brother's family would come during the early evening for the gift opening. Before we would open gifts, we always sat down for a light dinner that was either barbequed beef or barbequed ham. The children were always eager for the gift opening, but we were able to eat and talk for a while. Then the gift opening would start with the children going first. Each one opened all their gifts, tried on the new clothes, and opened the toys to see how they worked. The adults would go next with the children handing out the gifts. We would have cookies, candy and drinks while we opened gifts and chatted with each other. As it got later, my aunt, mother, and some of the grandchildren would go off to church for the Christmas Eve service. It was always so beautiful in the church with all the candles burning and the sounds of Christmas music. Then it would be back home late with my aunt and me staying up to talk about how the year went and how much we were thankful for. Then it was up in the morning for church as we needed to be there for Jesus' birthday and have a piece of his birthday cake.

Now most of my family, my family home, and my church are gone and I have been making new traditions. I now decorate my home every year about Thanksgiving time with a large collection of Santas. I place the Santas all over my home and then invite my family and friends to visit and enjoy them with me. I also have started a tradition of giving an ornament with every gift to someone as I want them to have it on their tree the next year to remember our caring for each other.

Things have changed in my life but Christmas remains the best time of year with all the memories of the past and the new traditions that are being created.
