The Wish Bone |
In our family it's always tradition to break the wish bone from the Thanksgiving turkey. We all play some kind of game (like guessing the number closest to Mom's number) to see what two people actually get to break the wish bone. The tradition dates back to the Etruscans 2400 years ago (believe it or not?). We don't actually get to break the wish bone on Thanksgiving day as it has to dry out thoroughly before it will snap. The wish bone is placed on the window sill at my Mom and Dad's house and when the family reconvenes for Christmas, the two lucky contenders begin the battle. Each takes hold of one end of the bone and pulls until it breaks. The one with the largest piece after the tug of war, gets a wish.
